| 05 January 2007 | At least every third year the European Commission must present a report on the quota system for potato starch to the Council. Just before Christmas the Commission consequently published its latest proposal for the future quotas for production of potato starch in Europe. The key elements in the report are a roll-over of the current quota regime for the coming two years - 2007/08 and 2008/09 respectively. Not all member countries have been satisfied so far with the existing regime and with the size of their national quotas. The Commission has, however, determined not to propose any changes in the quotas per member state. Before final decision about the future of the quota regime can be taken the Commission report must now be presented to the European Parliament for further process. Axel Bonde, legal advisor at KMC and member of the Exe. Committee of AAF expresses that both the European association of starch potato producers “CESPU” and “AAF” (the starch industry) would have preferred a three year roll-over. With the newly published commission proposal the result most certainly will be a limited extension of the current regime for just another two years, Axel Bonde concludes. ![]() |
