| 08 July 2008 | KMC President, Uffe Andreasen’s forecast for the coming
harvest year. |
Estimated supply It was late in the spring before potatoes were planted in Denmark and the growth in April/May was below average. Since about mid June and up to about mid July the growth has been a fairly good. The weather is an unpredictable element and we can still experience significant changes in our estimate of this year's harvest, but the situation in Denmark mid July points to an average year, maybe slightly above. In most part of Europe, on the other hand, reports tell of lower than normal harvest expectations. Estimated price development Everybody is aware of the drastic price development on corn and wheat. Starch potatoes are not included on the Board of Trade, but as starch producers we will, of course, only be able to secure the raw material if it is equally interesting for the farmers to grow potatoes and the big cereal grains. Energy prices also drive up the cost prices. KMC expects the stable trend seen during the first half of 2008 to continue for the next months, but that this will be followed by increasing prices for potato starch towards the end of the year. |
