| 24 June 2009 | KMC President Uffe Andreasen has the following comments on the
situation in the potato fields. In general the areas with potatoes are smaller this year - approx. 6-10% smaller. Also in the rest of EU reduced areas are the rule. In Denmark the weather in April was perfect and many potatoes were in the ground earlier than usual, most were planted by the end of April. The warm April was followed by much cooler weather in May and the development in the fields slowed down. The downside to the warm spring weather has been a lack of precipitation and at this time there is a definite water deficiency. The irrigation systems can be seen hard at work in the fields both day and night. As of now we expect an average harvest, but the exciting period is the next 3-4 weeks where ideal weather conditions will result in an excellent harvest whereas a drought will result in just the opposite. Most of Europe seems to be experiencing the same situation. Next harvest forecast will be out in late July. |
