Farm Girl finds the right fit for high-protein cereal with Protafy from KMC
A vision for a healthier cereal
Farm Girl, as fast-growing breakfast cereal producer from Canada, was founded on a simple idea - helping parents give children a healthier start to the day.
Following the success of its granola product, the company set out to create a new cereal range with strong nutritional credentials, a clean label, and meaningful protein content, without sacrificing taste, texture, colour, or affordability.
We set out to provide an affordable, delicious alternative that children would genuinely enjoy and parents could feel good about serving
said Alexander Paz, Director of Sles at Farm Girl.
Finding the right source and supplier
Farm Girl’s cereal development was the result of around 18 months of trials, surveys and testing, supported by feedback gathered through almost 900 events.
The business eventually arrived at a combination of faba and potato protein that provided the balance it was looking for across nutrition, flavour, colour neutrality, and processing performance.
KMC stood out for its responsiveness, commercial setup, and ability to support a fast-growing business, while its Protafy potato protein solution fitted well with Farm Girl’s formulation.

Why Protafy met the grade
Protafy helped maintain the puffy, light, and crunchy texture while increasing protein content. It also worked well alongside faba, so the two sources complemented each other rather than weighing the formulation down.
Protafy’s mild taste and neutral colour brought further advantages. Flavours such as chocolate and cinnamon remained clear and recognisable, while ingredients including turmeric, beet extract, and spirulina stayed vibrant in the finished product.
Protafy is a potato protein concentrate with a complete amino acid profile and a DIAAS score of 115.
For Farm Girl, that meant a high-quality protein source that could support its nutritional goals without compromising taste, texture or visual appeal.
Easy to handle, consistent at scale
As the formulation was refined, moisture control became an important technical consideration. Potato protein behaves differently from some other protein sources, so temperature, mixing, and extrusion settings were adjusted to achieve the right dough characteristics.
Once those parameters were established, Protafy proved straightforward to handle in day-to-day production. Farm Girl found it less prone to clumping and able to go into the mixer with little additional preparation, reducing the need for extra sifting, handling or processing.
Protafy also helps achieve a consistent result from batch to batch. This has become increasingly important as Farm Girl expands, with its cereals needing to deliver the same experience whether they are sold in Canada, Panama, South Korea or the UK.
The result has been a cereal range delivering 12 to 14 grams of protein per serving while retaining the characteristics we set out to achieve,
says Alexander.

A strong partnership ready for innovation
With the new cereal range established, Farm Girl is looking beyond today’s products and towards new markets and formats.
We’re all about innovation now. And we’re going to lean heavily on KMC for suggestions and ideas,
concludes Alexander.
