A growing need for transparent, comparable climate data
Feed and pet food producers are increasingly expected to calculate their environmental footprint in more detail. Whether driven by customer expectations, company sustainability strategies, or regulatory developments, the message is consistent: ingredient-level data must be credible, comparable, and straightforward to work with.
At KMC, we have seen this development over several years. Producers increasingly require valid, transparent data to support their own carbon accounting and sustainability reporting, making verified ingredient-level documentation essential. This is why we chose to invest in an LCA for PotaPro 1500 using methodology aligned with recognised industry practice.
“Our customers need data they can rely on. By publishing product-specific, third party-verified LCA data, we give them a transparent basis for their own sustainability calculations,” says Annette Lykke Voergaard, Feed & Petfood Specialist at KMC.
Verified product data for better footprint calculations
The LCA covers the full cradle-to-gate journey of PotaPro 1500 and is based on a three-year average of production data from our Danish facilities. The study was prepared by independent experts, reviewed by GFLI and verified to meet the requirements for inclusion in the GFLI branded database.
For PotaPro 1500, the assessment treats the potato itself as the raw material rather than only the potato juice. This approach provides a more accurate representation of the product’s footprint and distinguishes KMC’s ingredient data from the national averages in the database.
GFLI is widely used in the feed sector as a shared reference for calculating the environmental impact of feed ingredients. Its branded database includes primary, product-specific data that follows a consistent methodology, making it easier for producers to compare ingredients and work with figures that reflect real production conditions.
“The GFLI branded database gives feed and pet food producers a trusted framework for comparing the footprint of different ingredients. By contributing our own verified data, we support a more open and transparent approach to environmental assessments,” Annette explains.
What this means for our customers
The availability of branded LCA data for PotaPro 1500 directly supports the documentation needs of feed and pet food producers. They can integrate the figures into carbon accounting tools, reformulation projects, or sustainability reporting — without making broad assumptions or relying on national averages. This makes it easier to demonstrate progress, meet customer expectations, and assess protein choices on both nutritional and environmental performance.
The data is based on a clear methodology and traceable raw materials, giving customers confidence that the numbers are both accurate and comparable across the industry. It reflects a shared ambition to improve the environmental performance of feed and pet food formulations and supports producers who want to work with more sustainable ingredient sourcing.
“Our aim is to make sustainability documentation easier, not more complicated. With verified data available directly through GFLI, our customers can focus on making informed decisions and reaching their climate targets,” says Annette.
